 Sanal Kumar Sasidharan: I Want To Narrate Experiences And Not Just Tell Stories

Unlike the majority of filmmakers in the country and outside of it as well, filmmaker Sanal Kumar Sasidharan, believes in narrating an experience, especially spiritual. That’s been his endeavour as a  filmmaker.


New Delhi, Aug 27 (PTI) Streaming content on a computer screen can never match the distinct "vibe" of theatrical screenings, believes director Sanal Kumar Sasidharan who says filmmakers must respect loyal cinegoers no matter how small a community it may be. Sasidharan, known for acclaimed Malayalam titles "S Durga" and "Chola", said films are meant for the big screen.



Filmmaker Sanal Kumar Sasidharan, in an exclusive conversation with Outlook, talks about his approach to filmmaking, which helped him win the Disruptor in Cinema Award for his film ‘Kayattam’ at the recently concluded Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) 2021.

Sanal Kumar Sasidharan, who made films like S Durga and Chola, has been conferred the first-ever ‘Disruptor in Cinema’ award by the Government of Victoria at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, for his unique style of filmmaking in Kayattam. The film, which has Manju Warrier in the lead role, was completely shot on an iPhone.

That filmmaker Sanal Kumar Sasidharan has won another prestigious award for his latest venture Ahr Kayattam doesn’t come as a surprise for those following his stellar career. His films Ozhivudivasathe Kali won the Kerala State Film Award, Sexy Durga earned him the prestigious Hivos Tiger Award at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and Chola was screened at the Venice Film Festival’s Orizonti competition. The Malayali filmmaker, who has been lauded for being a unique voice of cinema, was recently conferred with the first ever Disruptor in Cinema award by the Government of Victoria at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne.
